6 of the best reliable first cars

So you’re thinking about driving or you’ve passed your test, that’s great! But choosing your first car shouldn’t be a rushed decision. With so many brands and models on the market, and various prices, knowing what is right for you is a must. Whether you’re looking for something that is trendy or fun to drive, or simply for a car that is cheap to insure and easy to park, there is something for everyone. When you’re buying second hand though, always make sure that the car has been well looked after, and make the most of test drives before you decide.

Ford Fiesta

It is easy to understand why this is one of the most popular cars in the UK. Well-built, fun and reliable, this car can suit all your needs. For something with a bit more room (but also a bit more pricey), opt for the hatchback.

Vauxhall Corsa

Perhaps more trendy than the Fiesta, the Corsa is another popular model. The 2000-2006 models benefit more from a larger boot and plenty of room up against the earlier models.

Volkswagen Polo

A good choice for a small, trendy and reliable car. If you’re working to a budget, Polos hold their value well so you might want to opt for an older model. The car is known for being comfortable to drive with low running cost and repair bills.

Peugeot 206

Another trendy supermini, its consistent popularity as a new car means that there is a lot on the second-hand market to choose from. It benefits most from its range of good engines and a timeless design.

Ford Focus

Since its introduction in 1998, this model is one of the first choices for many first-time and/or budget buyers. Reliability tends to be good but the revised Focus introduced in 2001 is a more desirable version.

Toyota Yaris

With a slightly different design to a lot of other superminis, the Yaris is perhaps slightly less known. It may not be as practical as its competitors but its high reliability levels and low running costs make this a worthy option.
